Welcome to Shayna and Norman's

Havurat Shabbat Class!

Dear Students,

In the Torah it is written, “On the seventh day God finished the work… and ceased from all the work … and God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because on it God ceased from all the work of creation…” (Genesis 2:2-3). Most people reading that passage find it a bit of a shock. “On the seventh day God finished the work. . . ” But what did God create on the seventh day? Didn’t God “cease. . . from all the work of creation” on the seventh day? What God created on the seventh day, the ancient rabbis tell us, was menuchah, rest.

Havurat Shabbat Lesson | 5.17.20

Hebrew: Restaurant vocabulary words (we can change our backgrounds so that we are sitting in a restaurant). Then, we will play pictionary with Hebrew letter practice/phonetic spelling.

Judaics: Parsha Behar. We will watch the posted Bim Bam video. We will talk about this year being when all debts are forgiven and slaves are set free. Students will be asked

what sustainable farming/giving rest to the lang might have to do with freeing slaves? How is this week's parsha related to shabbat? How is shabbat related to freedom?

We will close out class drawing posters to celebrate the jubilee year!
